Walk-In Showers

Regain your mobility with accessible, easy to clean designs.

Shower Accessibility for Safe Bathing

Age and/or limited mobility can make your old bathtub a chore in two ways:

1.  The bath’s edge can be uncomfortable to step over and increase the risk of slips and falls.

2.  It also tends to be harder to keep clean on a regular basis with materials or tiles that attract mold and mildew. This combination of restrictions takes much of the enjoyment and luxury out of bathing.

A walk-in or roll-in shower can eliminate these concerns with designs that are as easy as putting one foot in front of the other. Plus, at JDS Bath, we install tile and acrylic showers that make cleaning a breeze. Our acrylic is infused with an anti-bacterial product at the factory. Keeping your shower clean won’t be as much of a chore and using it will feel like the luxury it was meant to be.

Handicap Shower Features

Low-Entry and Zero-Entry Showers

There are two kinds of walk-in showers ideal for aging-in-place. These decrease barriers to bathing and make it possible to safely get clean.

Curbless Showers

You can choose a zero-entry, or curbless, shower to ensure there is nothing to step over while getting into your shower. These are especially important to consider using if you have a wheelchair or mobility aid.

Because there is no curb, these showers are also much easier to clean. There are less corners for grime and moisture.

They also offer a great way to maximize the space in your bathroom.

Low Threshold Shower

While a curbless shower is barrier free, a standard shower has around a 1 ½ in – 4in step over. The exact height of the step-over depends on your material of choice.

These low thresholds are great for people who need a more easily accessible shower but also want to prevent water from getting outside of the shower.

This 1 ½ in – 4in lip makes it easy to enter and exit the shower but isn’t quite as mobility aid friendly as the zero-entry shower.

Walk-in Bathtubs for Improved Bathing Access

In addition to walk-in showers, people with limited mobility can consider adding a walk-in bathtub to their bathroom.

A walk-in tub allows you to enter and exit your empty tub through a door instead of climbing over the ledge of a tub. There are several health-related features available for walk-in bathtubs.  One option is a jetted bathtub. This option provides hydrotherapy which has several proven health benefits for those suffering with back pain, muscle pain, stress, insomnia, arthritis, rheumatism, or diabetes.

These specialty tubs are designed to make your life easier and can offer better accessibility for:

  • Older individuals who have limited mobility
  • Those suffering from diabetes and circulatory diseases
  • People with physical limitations due to a disability
  • Anyone with balance or coordination trouble
  • Those who find a standard sized bathtub uncomfortable to use

You can easily eliminate many bathing hazards with a walk-in tub. You don’t have to worry about standing or slipping in the shower and you have a low-effort entry great for people of all abilities.

Lawrence P. - Chesterfield, VA

Extremely professional. My wife and I contemplated on remodeling the bathroom and after meeting with a few companies decided to go with JDS. We were so impressed that we decided to have them do a second bathroom. Highly recommend going to JDS first before other companies. Some other businesses said they were giving a discount and if we signed by the end of the day would give an additional discount even though their final price was higher.

Gary - Gloucester, VA

Very professional. Work was completed expeditiously. I was asked before placement of any fixtures or grab bars. Very happy with the end result.

Julie - Chesterfield, VA

Very professional. Project involved removing a section of wall as well and it turned out better than I’d expected. Took some time to get on the calendar but he called when he said he would, arrived the next day, and the work was completed in just a few days. I love my new shower.
